Dental Assistant Courses
A dental assistant program will prepare you for a variety of duties that are required in a dental office. The majority of your day will be spent in clinical preparations, performing basic office tasks, and patient care. In order to take on this role, it is important to have the right training and education.
A few of the courses that you will come across will be the following:
First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
CPR is an emergency procedure used to maintain brain functions until normal circulation and breathing are reinstated in a patient. Learning CPR is very important to the dental assistant in case an emergency situation takes place at the dental office.
Clinical Chair Side Assisting
This course will allow you to learn how to assist a patient during a procedure and ensure their comfort during treatment. You will also assist the dentist or dental hygienist by providing them with the proper instruments and materials during a dental procedure.
Dental Materials
Learn to use and identify dental materials for impressions, rubber dams, and cement. As a dental assistant there will be many new dental materials that you will come across.
Business Administration
Working in an office environment will require you to be knowledgeable with dental billing software and equipment. An administration course teaches how to process payments and confirm appointments for patient as well as process orders for dental instruments and materials.
Oral pathology, pharmacology, pain control and therapeutics
In these courses you will be introduced to various illnesses and how to identify signs and symptoms of an illness.
Radiology
A course in radiology will teach you how to perform and evaluate x-rays.
Internships:
After completing the standard courses in your dental assistant program, the final step before graduation is an externship. An externship will allow you to gain on the job-training in a dental office.
